Salahuddin Wahid decided to call on a friend to visit him at his home at the Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School complex in Jombang, East Java, last week. He needed someone to talk to.

On short notice, students scrambled to tidy up the house for the afternoon arrival. After everything was prepared, Gus Solah, as Salahuddin is commonly called, welcomed Islamic politics scholar and friend Martin Van Bruinessen into his home.
