A day of fighting in devastated Ambon and a controversial sweep for weapons by military specialists left at least 19 dead.

It was an official sweep for weapons, carried out in the public interest. But it came amid heavy fighting and disputed circumstances. When the raid was over two soldiers were dead along with 17 civilians, presumed to be members of the Laskar Jihad militia.
