THOUSANDS of jubilant residents lined the streets of Tiro, a small town in eastern Aceh, on Saturday last week, shouting "merdeka" (freedom) and waving the black-striped red flags of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM). They were rejoicing over the declaration of the small town in the district of Pidie as a demilitarized zone.
