GARENG has now gone forever, following Semar and Petruk (names of punakawan or servants of royalty—Ed.) on Tuesday night last week, at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta. Ismail Saleh, once nicknamed Gareng, ended his long journey of life after four months’ treatment for brain cancer. Semar, the moniker for Mudjono, died earlier in 1984. Petruk, as Ali Said used to be called, died in 2003.
