Kunarto and the Boat People

Former National Police Chief, Gen. (ret) Kunarto passed away. He rose to prominence after he managed Vietnamese refugees on Galang Island.

AFTER retiring from the National Police Force and Supreme Audit Agency (BPK), Kunarto spent his retirement in Bojonegoro, a small town in East Java. At home, he was frequently seen wearing only a sarong and short-sleeved undershirt. At times, he would sweep the floor of the veranda.

This man of substance died on Wednesday September 28 at the Surabaya International Hospital. His remains were flown to Jakarta and buried at the Kalibata Heroes Cemete
