On a hot day in 1941, after a long journey by ship from the United States to Surabaya, and continuing by rail to Jakarta, Herawati stepped off the train at Gambir station. She "beheld an amazing sight," as she wrote in her memoirs, Kembara Tiada Berakhir (Endless Voyage, 1993).

Gamelan music was heard and the platform was filled by people welcoming her. Someone placed flowers around her neck, and she was interviewed by Sport en Beeld en Wereldnieuws, and profiled by Pertjatoeran Doenia dan Film, a rag headed by a man who would later play a most significant part in her life. She was astonished that she had 'become a celebrity', by dint of spending six years abroad doing her studies: two at the American High School in Tokyo
