Wanted: a Constitutional Education Budget

The funding level for the education sector in the 2006 State Budget has been declared unconstitutional. The Constitutional Court is giving the government a chance to fix this by amending this years spending.

THE government and the House of Representatives (DPR) will have to increase education funding in 2006. Last Wednesday, the Constitutional Court ruled that Law No. 13/2005 on the 2006 State Budget is in violation of the constitutional stipulation on education spending. The allocation is too small, less than half the size it should be. Given the current economic difficulties, it will not be easy for the government to reshuffle an already tight budge
