THE House of Representatives (DPR) has passed the new Citizenship Law. This means that children born as the result of any kind of marriageas long as the mother is an Indonesian citizencan now become Indonesian citizens.

This is a law that was welcomed with joy. The event was greeted noisily and enthusiastically by a group of women and their foreign husbands who had come to the DPR. The law replaces an almost 50-year-old statute.
