WE have been self-mesmerized too long by the beauty of our nation, comprising 17,000 islands scattered along the equator like emeralds. It is strategically located, at the crossroads between two continents and two oceans. But we forget that this nation sits in a zone of active volcanoes. Indonesia also lies on two continental plates that rub against each other, that often trigger powerful earthquakes and tsunamis.
