In the past three years, three mothers have committed suicide after killing their children, apparently because of economic hardship.

THE recent tragedy in Malang has raised many questions. The reasons for the apparent murder-suicide of Junania Mercy—who killed her four children beforehand—are not clear from her background. Even the woman’s cause of death and that of her four children are not conclusive. It will become more difficult to determine accurately because the family is objecting to an autopsy.
