Under the new regulations covering elections, the power of political parties is greater than that of voters. Indonesia needs a district electoral system.

WHAT to do? Electing people’s representatives in a more democratic way still seems to be beyond our reach. To be sure, some improvements were made in Law No. 10 on the Legislative Elections, which was passed last April, but the changes were insufficient. The most substantive element did not change at all: parties still have the right to determine the order in which candidates are listed on the voting roster.
