A Quick Count Ends in Chaos

The announcement of who won the South Sumatra gubernatorial election led to confusion and chaos. A lesson to be learnt is not to treat quick counts as the final results.

QUICK counts in the South Sumatra gubernatorial election by three polling organizations produced differing results. These results convinced supporters of both candidates that they had won. So, nobody conceded defeat. As a result, the announcement of the actual winner based on the final count by the regional General Elections Commission (KPU) was marked by protests. There were scuffles when supporters forced their way in to the KPK building.
