THE number of abortions for non-medical reasons has reached a horrifying level. Some 100,000 women in Jakarta are estimated to have aborted their fetuses every year. Throughout the nation more than 2.5 million women are reported to have prematurely ended their pregnancies. The demand for abortions has led to a kind of black market where the “market price” for illicit abortions has soared due to the limited number of medical personnel.
