THE Suramadu (SurabayaMadura) Bridge was first proposed by renowned Indonesian architect, the late Prof. Sedyatmo, during the 1960s. Because of obstacles—from the economic crisis to concerns about the “future” of Madura and its religious population—construction was continually delayed.
