AS members of a political party born in the reform era, the National Mandate Party (PAN) functionaries should know by now why the Suharto regime fell. Decades of corruption and repression triggered public opposition, and the New Order collapsed in 1998. Hopes for a major change appeared when reformist figures at the time established the People’s Mandate Council, a precedent of the National Mandate Party.
