This nation has repeatedly failed to protect freedom of expression. The security forces who should be defending the freedom to assemble and voice opinions, bowed to the demands of a group promoting violence. In the discussion of the book Allah, Liberty and Love written by feminist Irshad Manji at the Salihara complex in South Jakarta two weeks ago, the police even helped suspend a fundamental right that is clearly guaranteed in the Constitution.
