Kartini means more than just wearing the traditional kebaya or attending a ceremony. Kartini means women's rights, the struggle for gender equality and Indonesian nationalism in the 19th century. Composer WR Supratman was right when he called Kartini the champion of her gender". A champion is a defender who does not win every fight.
