NOT so long ago, when Indonesia was governed by the New Order regime, law enforcement depended on who held the reins of power and politically motivated murders went unaccounted for. Today, there is very little chance of activists disappearing or of journalists going to jail for their critical reports, or getting themselves killed. Nevertheless, unresolved and unexplained cases still hang over us like a black cloud. It puts a damper on efforts to democratize and in the process, to right the wrongs of the past.
