THE way the Police Crime Investigation Division (Bareskrim) forcibly detained Novel Baswedan two weeks ago was a display of arrogance, arbitrary implementation of working procedures and abuse of authority. It was a long way from the job of law enforcement officers: to serve the people and uphold the law. The police detained Novel, a senior Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) leader with an excellent reputation; handcuffed him like a terrorist and sent him to the Mobile Police Brigade headquarters in Kelapa Dua, Depok.
