Golkar's Political Farce

Tuesday, May 24, 2016

It is ironic that when other political parties seek to rid themselves of troublesome and corrupt politicians to improve their public image, Golkar chose to elect Setya Novanto as its new chairman.

Setya Novanto is a politician deeply embroiled in a myriad of court cases, from ethical violations to alleged involvement in the 2012 Riau National Sports Week graft. He was also accused of namedropping President Joko Widodo in a conspiracy to extend Freeport Indonesia's contract in a case infamously known as 'Papa Wants Shares'. He was pressured to step down from his position as speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), while his trial on ethical charges was ongoing. He also appeared at US presidential candidate Donald Trump's campaign event, a move many slammed as 'ethically inappropriate'.
