Jakarta needs a governor who is capable, courageous and able to govern using the principles of good management. If any of these three requirements are not met, it is difficult to see how the nation's capital can develop in a way that is fair to all its citizens.
In 2012, Joko Widodo and Basuki Tjahaja Purnama inspired much hope when they were elected governor and deputy governor, respectively, of Jakarta. Construction of a mass rapid transit system began after stalling for years. Street traders were properly organized and city parks were built in many places. Jakarta's middle class enjoyed real change.
