An Editor Sentenced, the Press Criminalized

Tempo's chief editor has been sentenced to jail. The court has criminalized the case and threatened the freedom of the press.

When the judge sentenced this magazine's chief editor, Bambang Harymurti to jail, the court condemned press freedom itself. Last Thursday, in the Central Jakarta district court, Bambang Harymurti (BHM) was found guilty of the following counts: of intentionally spreading false news and inciting agitation, and of defaming the good name of rich businessman Tomy Winata. For this, he was sentenced to a year in prison.
