A journalist in Sleman was sentenced to nine months in jail on libel charges—a punishment more severe than during the Dutch colonial period.

ARTICLE 310 of the Criminal Code has again claimed a victim. The article, a holdover from the Dutch colonial period, was used by a court in Sleman, Yogyakarta, to sentence Risang Bima Wijaya to nine months in jail on libel charges. Wijaya, a former editor of the Radar Jogja daily was charged with defaming one Soemadi Wonohito in an article he wrote in the newspaper more than two years ago.
