The Aceh catastrophe has become a humanitarian disaster. The government should immediately form a team to direct international aid.

The tsunami has changed the status of Aceh from a civil to a world emergency situation. Last week the Health Department estimated that around 80,000 people had died in Aceh, while those who survived are still under threat. Hundreds of thousands cannot yet be said to have truly escaped the threat of death. Apart from the loss of their family members, in general they are still facing difficulties with food, clothing and housing.
