THE presence of foreign troops in Aceh to conduct humanitarian relief operations has been seen as a mixed blessing. While it is hard to doubt their usefulness, some feel uneasy about the impact on the nation's dignity, or perhaps because they share anti-foreign sentiments. In order to appease such feelings, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono appears to have sought a middle path by declaring that foreigners will stay no more than three months.
