FROM the September 11 attacks to the October 12, 2002, Bali bombing, the world has come to know a new and horrific form of violence without agreeing on a way to prevent it. Voices from Asia call out, to "do away with hatred and double standards." Pope John Paul II says, "stop hostility." These cries go out in all directions, but there is no consensus. On one hand there is shock and confusion, on the other, deep-rooted anger.
