Crown-of-thorns starfish are endangering the coral reefs at Bunaken and Wakatobi. Garbage increases their numbers.

DIVING with a stick in hand is advice for divers wishing to enjoy the Bunaken Marine Park in North Sulawesi. Christiane Muller, a Dutch diving instructor, does so. While diving, she carries a meter-long stick with a pointed tip. When leaving the water she would bury her prey on the beach. They are dozens of crown-of-thorns starfish or Acanthaster planci, which have been attacking Bunaken en masse lately.
