Deaths from edema and malnutrition still haunt a number of regions. The local governments should assume greater responsibility, says the Health Minister. Integrated health clinics need to be revived.

ALMOST each year the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province declares itself to be a region with edema categorized as an extraordinary event (KLB). Last week the Regency of Rote Ndao determined edema as a KLB following the deaths of five children from such condition. After declaring the status, the government took hundreds of children under 5 years old suspected of suffering from severe hunger and malnutrition for treatment to community health centers
