IN the 1970s, the late Professor Manase Mallo, a University of Indonesia (UI) sociologist, presented the results of his research on urbanization to the National Development Planning Board (Bappenas). Ambon emerged as a potential conflict area due to its high population density and strong segregation between the different religious groups. The report said one small incident could ignite conflict in the city easily.
