BEAMS of purple light seemed to cleave the sky when I arrived on the mountaintop, one morning last March. Pines grow along the crater edge. It was serene and the surface of the lake sparkled golden rays of the dawn. At a height of 1,670 meters above sea level, the cold wind pierced the bones. Johannes Voda, 61, served a cup of hot ginger coffee. It was incredibly delicious, especially after ascending Mt Kelimutu.
