After a life-changing experience, Frenchman Andre Graff decided to settle in Waru Wora village, Lamboya district, Sumba. He is striving to make life for the local people a little easier.

PHOTOGRAPHS of houses with straw roofs, rice paddy fields, children playing, traditional rituals and scenes of everyday lives line up the white walls of Centre Cultural Francais exhibition room in Salemba, Jakarta. The pictures, exhibited from February 23-March 7 with the title “Surprising Sumba”, were sure to delight any visitor. But a panel in one corner of the room reveals that this is more than just an ordinary photo exhibition:
