The Kutai Kertanaegara regency government in East Kalimantan issued permits to 52 coal mining companies to operate within the Bukit Suharto Forest Park in violation of the environment law.

ENVIRONMENT Minister Hidup Gusti M. Hatta, on a recent visit to Bukit Suharto in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, was surprised to find coal mining companies operating within the 67,000-hectare forest park area.

“Has all this been reported to the police?” Hatta asked local officials who accompanied him on his visit to Bukit Suharto on Friday last week.
