A group of village women began eco-friendly material-based handicraft production in Tinongko village, Mantehage Island. The small economy is stimulated and the environment is conserved. Tempo’s Sadika Hamid visited the island in North Sulawesi on March, 24-25 to cover their activities.

THE bamboo-wall hut stands by the main road of Tinongko village. A group of housewives sit around a white cloth-covered bamboo table. While chatting interspersed with occasional hearty laughs their hands dexterously sort wooden beads, making necklaces and unraveling the cords. On the walls of the hut are posters featuring the theme of environment conservation: “Stop Illegal Logging” or “Forest is a source of water that never runs out.”
