Indonesia only has 20 taxonomists—marine biota classification experts—while its territorial waters constitute 70 percent of the nation’s area. Since 2008, attempts have been made to secure taxonomic candidates. The target: 100 new experts in the next 10 years.

A WORKSHOP took place in Denpasar at the end of April. The core of this program was the presentation of taxonomic workshop results. The training was funded with proceeds from the auction of new marine biota species of Raja Ampat, West Papua, in Monaco in September 2007.
