Sentani tree bark paintings are now recognized far outside of Papua, even abroad. How do local artisans revive interest in this craft? The limited availability of materials is becoming a problem.

AT an exhibition, a dark-skinned man with wavy hair unrolls some material resembling a straw mat on a low wooden platform. Taking off his shoes, he sits cross-legged on the 1 x 2 meter piece of material. He takes something from a plastic cup near a stack of that material, then starts etching the material he sits on.
