IT turns out that garbage, that useless waste, has brought about some ingenious uses: from alternative energy to works of art. The opportunities to process it-among them by following the 3Rs (Recycle, Reduce, Reuse)-are almost limitless, keeping in mind the millions of tons of it which are piling up in Indonesia's major cities. IT often takes more work to get rid of useless trash than to take care of useable goods. As an example, every day the 6,000 tons or so of garbage produced in Jakarta is disposed of at the Bantar Gebang Garbage Disposal Area (TPA) in Bekasi. The total volume of garbage from Jakarta alone has reached about 10 million cubic meters over the past 21 years. This waste forms five large mounds on 110.3 hectares of land at the Bantar Gebang facility.
