Muara Enggelam: Life on the River

Enggelam is only one of the hundreds of floating villages stretching along the rivers of Kalimantan. The water communities produced a very typical culture all pivoted on water and rivers.

A GROUP of children was carried slowly aboard a boat sailing along Enggelam River on Sunday morning, two weeks ago. It was drizzling. Little girls were neatening their headscarves and little boys straightening their caps. From Semayang village in Muara Wis district, the children went to a neighboring village for religious lessons.
