Building a pinisi is marked with many rituals. Each phase of work from the cutting of a tree until the vessel’s launch is accompanied by rituals invoking safety and luck.

THE Bulukumba people have never forgone three rituals in the tradition of building pinisi boats. They are the rituals observed for cutting off the tree (kalabiseang), cutting up the wood (annattara) and determining the center (ammossi). “These rituals are believed to bring safety,” said Abdullah Hasan, 49, one of the punggawa or master pinisi builders who has become a successful boat-building entrepreneur in the village of Tana Lemo, Bulukumb
