April 6 is a day to honor all fishermen. Yet in this marine nation of ours, the welfare of fishermen continues to be a great concern. Their environmentally unfriendly practice of fishing sometimes threatens the marine ecosystem and reduces the catch. But many fishing villages are striving to change this. They are involved in a variety of projects—from raising fingerlings to replanting mangrove and transplanting coral reefs—in an attempt to restore the sea’s abundance and ensure the sustainability of their main source of livelihood.
