Makassar will host the ‘Smart Village’ program, the first in Indonesia. Makassar gained fame when it succeeded with its Makassar Green and Clean, a program on environmentally friendly villages. The Smart Village program invites villages to protect the environment and develop potentials at the same time that it implements nature conservation. WASTE clearly brings profits. This is the belief of the residents of RW (residents’ association) 03 Karang Anyar village, Makassar. Achmad Sese, the leading motivator of the Karang Anyar residents offered this as proof: “Several (residents) have succeeded in educating their children through high school, some even through university (because of waste).” Then there is the experience of Djamrud Damayanti, a resident of RW 01 in Untia village.
