Environmental destruction and illegal hunting has led to a drastic decline in the number of Bali starlings at the West Bali National Park. Only 50 of the islands native birds remain, five of them bred naturally and the rest in an artificial environment. Concerned at the possible disappearance of these birds, conservationists have invited the populace living closest to the starlings habitat to take part in a unique project that would protect the Bali starlings while ensuring the peoples livelihood.
