Water to reinforce brotherhood

The people in Tobelo, North Maluku, observe a water ritual to boost the spirit of brotherhood. The Nusantara Custom Community Alliance (AMAN) has adapted this ritual to unify traditional communities across Indonesia.

An empty cup was raised toward the sun in the hot month of May. Gathered around were people clad in traditional outfits from various parts of Indonesia.

One by one they came forward, holding a bamboo joint filled with water, which was then poured into the cup called Kolam Tugu Perdamaian (peace icon pool).
