Indonesia's marine territory is about 3.2 million square kilometers in sizeone of the largest in the world. Among its most precious underwater resources are its coral reefs, which make up about 14 percent of the world's reefs. Lamentably, almost one-third of Indonesia's reefs are damaged, mostly caused by human activities. Coral reefs in Bali's Bay of Pemuteran and at Kalasey Beach in Manado are almost totally destroyed. But thanks to the hard work of local residents, the underwater beauty of both areas is slowly being restored. Tempo English reports from Bali and Manado to mark National Maritime Day on August 21.
