The environmental damage to Indonesia's coastal areas and the continuing illegal and excessive fishing has drastically reduced the fish supply, the main source of livelihood for fishing communities. In 2011, the Central Bureau of Statistics recorded more than seven million poor people living on coastal areas, equal to 25 percent of the country's poor population. In a few places, many had come to realize that they had to restore conditions to their previous state if they were to survive and become self-sufficient. They initiated programs to restore the bounty from the sea. To commemorate Fisherman's Day on April 6, Tempo English reports from Bali and from south and north Sumatra.

Serangan Island Treasure Trove
Local fishermen have been able to rehabilitate three hectares of coral reef at Serangan Island, Bali. The fish have returned and tourism is flourishing.
