Elsa sprawled herself out on a metal table at the Bengkulu Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA). The female tiger had been tranquilized. Dr Erni Suyanti Musabine, usually called Yanti, was unwrapping a bandage on Elsa's toe which had been amputated.
Carefully and skilfully, Yanti cleaned the wound, which had begun to dry, before redressing it with gauze. "The wound has improved," the doctor said as she applied a plaster cast. Yanti then checked Elsa's heartbeat and eyes while lifting the tiger's front and rear paws.
