THE strange wooden contraption on the wall of Ansari's home in Pangkalan Buton village, West Kalimantan, looks like a bright suitcase to the untrained eye. Peek inside, however, and the sight of a lead-acid battery and a power inverter show that it is something else entirely. "This is the first 'power-to-power' electricity generator ever made by Poltak," Ansari, a resident of Pangkalan Buton told Tempo.
Poltak is Miswan Edi Santoso's nickname. The 42-year-old keeps a workshop in Tanjung Belimbing village in Kayong North Subdistrict, around three kilometers from Ansari's home, where he builds the generators. More than 100 are now spread throughout West Kalimantan.
