THE soaring meranti (Shorea spp.) tree in the forest concession area was not special. The perennial plant looks quite ordinary-that is, until someone touches it with a chainsaw, at which moment a long vertical line of black soil within it becomes visible. "A hollow reaches the tree top," said Totok Suripto, Production Director of Karya Lestari, to Tempo on the logging site in block Q15, Kelay District, Berau, East Kalimantan.
