Baharuddin was unable to hide his joy two weeks ago; a flood-prevention dam, he told Tempo English, had turned his family's fortunes for the better. "Praise God, with this check dam I yielded a good harvest," the 46-year-old farmer said.
Before the district government of Bantaeng Regency built the check dam four years ago, his 10-hectare rice field yielded just 10 tons of mediocre paddy that sold for a meager Rp3,000 a kilogram. In addition, he and other farmers in the neighboring villages often experienced harvest failures.
