Using local wisdom, four villages in Riau have built canals to attenuate the impacts of forest fires during the dry season.

Tanjung Leban used to be known as 'the village with a thousand roots'. That was how Japanese occupiers described it during World War II, as its thousands of underwater tree roots could be seen through the village's crystal-clear waters at the shore. Today, such an image of Tanjung Leban is hard to summon.
