IN the old section of Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, two buildings tower over Jalan Soekarno. On first glance, the cross and crescent moon may not stick out. But it is here that Muslims and Christians are confidently observing their faiths as neighbors.
The two buildings were built in 1957, within months of one anther. David Agus Setiawan, 48, the minister at Bukit Zaitun Pentecostal Church, said close proximity was a non-issue. "We live side by side without conflict," he said, adding that every year before Christmas, the mosque's caretakers went out of their way to lend a helping hand.
